Laser hair removal uses short pulses of light to heat the pigment inside a hair and the follicle it grows from. Over a course of sessions that weakens the follicle, so hair comes back finer, slower and patchier. It gives long-term hair reduction rather than permanent removal, and V&F Beauty Lounge would rather say that at the start than let anyone book expecting something else.
It suits people who are tired of shaving or waxing the same patch every few weeks, and it works best when dark hair sits against lighter skin. If your hair is white, grey, red or very fair, the laser has almost nothing to grab hold of, and we will tell you rather than sell you a course. Every first course at our Headington salon starts with a patch test.
How laser hair removal works
The laser sends a pulse of light into the skin. Melanin, the pigment that gives hair its colour, absorbs that light and turns it into heat. The heat travels down the hair shaft into the follicle and damages the structures that grow it. Skin, which holds far less pigment than a dark hair, is left comparatively untouched.
That one fact explains most of what follows. The greater the contrast between the hair and the skin around it, the more precisely the light lands where it is meant to. Dark, coarse hair on fair or medium skin gives the laser its clearest target. Hair with little or no pigment gives it almost nothing to work with.
Why it takes a course, not one session
Hair does not all grow at once. Every follicle moves through a growing phase, a short transition and a resting phase, and only hair in the growing phase is still properly connected to the follicle the laser needs to reach. A follicle in its resting phase has effectively let go of the hair above it, so heating that hair achieves nothing.
At any one moment only a share of the hair in an area is in its growing phase. That is why a single session can never clear a whole area, and why sessions are spaced weeks apart instead of run back to back. The gap gives the next batch of follicles time to move into their growing phase, so there is something for the next session to act on. The right gap depends on the area, since facial hair cycles more quickly than hair on the legs.
What results to expect, honestly
Laser gives long-term hair reduction. Across a course you should see hair coming through finer, lighter and slower, with bare patches spreading between whatever is left. Most people reach a point where the area is easy to live with and shaving becomes occasional rather than constant.
What it does not do is guarantee that every follicle is gone for good. Hormones shift, dormant follicles wake up, and most people come back for the odd top-up session to hold the result. Anyone promising permanent removal is overselling it.
Your patch test and first session
Every first course starts with a patch test. We look at your skin and your hair, ask about your health, any medication and any recent sun or fake tan, then test a small area at the settings we would plan to use. We leave it a few days to see how your skin has responded. It is a short appointment and it is the part that keeps the rest of the course safe and comfortable.
Shave the area the day before. The laser needs the hair below the surface, not above it, and hair left long on the skin takes the energy where it does no good and makes the session sting for no benefit. Do not wax, pluck, thread or epilate for a few weeks beforehand, because those pull the root out and leave the laser nothing to aim at.
Laser hair removal prices in Oxford
Prices are per session and depend on the size of the area. Small areas are quick: a centre brow is £20.00 for 15 minutes, an upper lip £25.00, a chin £28.00, and hands or feet £25.00. Underarms are £30.00 for 20 minutes and a bikini triangle is £39.00.
Larger areas take longer and cost more. A lower leg is £50.00 for 40 minutes, a full leg £100.00 for an hour, a full arm £69.00, a full back £89.00, a Brazilian £69.00 and a Hollywood £79.00. For several areas at once, full body excluding face is £299.00 over two hours and full body including face is £369.00 over two and a half hours.
Because a course is several sessions, work out the cost of the whole course rather than the single visit. Call us on 01865 741333 and we will go through a realistic plan for the areas you actually want done.
Laser or waxing?
Waxing clears an area completely on the day, and the hair returns on its own schedule a few weeks later. It works on any hair colour, it costs less per visit, and there is nothing to commit to. For fair, grey or red hair it is the sensible option, because laser has no pigment to target.
Laser costs more up front and asks for patience, but the aim is different. Over a course there is simply less hair to deal with. Plenty of clients start with waxing or threading, decide they are tired of the loop, and move to laser for the areas that bother them most. We do all of it here, so there is no pressure either way.
